The 4 spice blend originates from a Jamaican pepper, Pimenta Dioica, a highly fragrant berry also known as allspice or four-spice.
It is named as such because when its leaves are crushed, they release notes of cloves, nutmeg, sometimes ginger, and of course, pepper.
This is how the four-spice became a blend of 4 distinct spices: pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
What to use 4 spices with?
This versatile blend will accompany your meats such as chicken, terrines or pâtés, as well as your cucurbitacae vegetables (squash, pumpkin, etc.) in all forms: as soup, pan-fried, grilled...
For dessert, you have probably already incorporated it into your shortbreads and cake doughs. It also goes very well with fruit: sprinkled directly on pineapple, apple, pear, or apricot, it will work wonders. Finally, feel free to integrate it into your compotes and jams!
